Code Spaces v2.5

Posted by Floyd Price

We are pleased to announce the availability of Code Spaces v2.5, this is the first in a series of updates that will bring us to v3.0 over the coming months.

This update includes many foundational enhancements, performance updates and extra scaling options, including:

  • Infrastructure Update
All the Code Spaces SVN, App and database servers are now running on Amazon EC2 and as such we have updated all components to take advantage of the almost limitless scaling opportunities.
  • Changes to Plans
With our new found abundance of space and processing power we have updated the Code Spaces Plans, in a nut shell all plans now have unlimited projects and repositories and the FREE plan now has 500MB of disk space (10x what it was).
  • Card Walls
A new tab has been introduced to Code Spaces between the Dashboard and Work Items called “Card Wall”.
A Card wall is a visualization of Work items, and allows work items to be displayed as cards in virtual swim lanes that represent categories such as Work Item Status, or Assigned To. Within the context of a milestone Card Walls give Agile teams the ability to plan, estimate, do Stand Ups, etc all from the Code Spaces UI.
The Card Wall section also allows for convenient dragging and dropping between swim lanes, so re-allocating or prioritizing work items couldn’t be easier.
  • Browser Rendering Issues
All known IE6, 7 and 8 rendering issues have been resolved.
Firefox 3+ exhibited rendering issues on the Code Spaces Dashboard where the timeline would bleed through any components above like menus or dialogs. This has been resolved.
  • Email Notifications
Users can now receive email notifications from activity in the Code Spaces forums.
Admins can now specify user notification preferences in the User Admin section.
  • Return URLs
Previously the Code Spaces application would redirect to the login page when an login was required which is great, however the context of the request was lost and the user would not be returned back to the page they requested after a successful login, this has now been resolved.
  • Backup Changes
We now use the snapshot feature of Amazons Elastic Block storage to take block level backups every 10 minutes, we are also taking actual backups of each repository as a commit occurs meaning we have a much greater capacity to respond to failure.

A few other not so noteworthy bugs have been fixed and many performance improvements have been applied.

As i mentioned this is one of many updates that we will be applying over the coming months, v2.6 is scheduled to go live in exactly one month from now ;-)

As always please Contact Us if you have any suggestions ;-)

Many Thanks,

Floyd Price

SVN 1.5.5 Upgrade Complete and Code Spaces v3.0 is coming.

Posted by Floyd Price

The planned upgrade to Subversion 1.5.5 went ahead today and was completed without incident (it’s always nice when that happens).

While i’m here i thought i would give a quick note about our plans for CodeSpaces v3.0 ;-)

Scope

  • UI Re-write
Many users have stated that the current UI isn’t quick enough for continued use and some of the UI conventions arn’t as intuative as they could be, with this in mind we are completeley re-writing the UI with Speed and Ease of use being our guiding principles.
  • Time Tracking
Tracking time against Work Items is essential for project managers, as such this will be implemented in v3.0
  • Card Walls
For Agile teams that use Card Walls (story boards) we have developed an integrated card wall module that incorperates the Code Spaces Work Items, Milestones and Users.
  • Project Admins
The current system allows for many Accoutn admins but not specific project admins, this is a real pain to our customers with multiple projects.
  • SVN Commit Postbacks
When a commit occures on one of your repositories you can specifiy a postbacj URL that the Code Spaces system will call detailing the commit details, this will allow for easy integration with other systems post commit.
  • Code Spaces API
The current Beta API will be re-written taking in to account the feedback that we have been given over the last few months.
  • Subversion Folder Permissions
Subversion allows for granular permissions that are currently not exposed via the Code Spaces system, this will be resolved in v3.0
  • Large Commit Issues
Some users report time out issues with large commits, after investigation we have identified a flaw in the underlying technology that we developed to manage multiple SVN accounts and servers, this will be enhanced as part of v3.0

Schedule

We will be releasing a Live BETA towards the end of this quarter to allow users to test the NEW UI against existing Data, We will then schedule in a Live release resulting in a complete migration from the v2.x UI to the v3.0 UI in the following month.

Feedback

Most of the v3.0 functionality is already developed but now is the time to give feedback on these features or any missing functionality that you might have noticed.

Code Spaces Upgrade to v2.2

Posted by Floyd Price

Code Spaces is now running on version 2.2 which includes several small fixes, an upgrade to Rails v2.1 and some enhancements to the Forums and Work Items.

Rails v2.1
Code Spaces v2.0 included an upgrade to rails 2.0 which enabled us to deliver better performance and more caching. Rails v2.1 adds to this with better performance out of the box as well as a more complete caching mechanism which allows us to cache more content to make pages load quicker.

Forums
We have been aware of the limitations if the Code Spaces forums for some time, and starting with v2.2 we are addressing these issues.

Forums threads now show last replied by messages so you don’t need to go into each thread to look for replies.

Forum messages now feature rich text editing.

Forum messages can be edited or deleted by the message creator or an account admin, this can be done from the message itself rather than being a task in the admin section.

Work Items

The Work Item grid now shows a created on column.

Work Item changes are now audited, this data can be viewed from the Work Item History tab in the Work Item viewer.

Work Items can now be linked to to Documents in the document module.

Work Item email notifications now include the correct link back to Code Spaces so you can go into the Work Item from the email.

Upgrade Fee
As always the upgrade has already been applied and is FREE to all users.

Version 2.3
We are already working on version 2.3 and will continue to make incremental improvements to the platform so please feel free to Contact Us with enhancement ideas.

Upgrade Complete

Posted by Floyd Price

Part 1 of 3 major upgrades to the Code Spaces software and infrastructure has now been completed.

This upgrade includes much of the v2.0 functionality and some of the hardware upgrades to support it, we will be doing the second part of this upgrade in two weeks.

So What’s New?

Project Portals

Each project can now have a project portal, which can be public (anyone can see it) or private (only users you create can see it) – Portals consist of several pages from you project wiki and can include pages to submit bugs and view public work items.

Email Notifications

You can now subscribe to events such as Subversion Commits via email, simply go to your profile admin and select the notifications you wish to receive – Make sure you check you registered email address is correct?

Document Module

You can now upload documents to Code Spaces.

Anonymous SVN access

We now allow anonymous SVN read access, to enable this go to the project admin section and modify the repository settings.

Wiki

We have improved the wiki syntax and rendering to support the project portals.

Dashboard

We have included a new Subversion Stats module to the dashboard which gives a visual representation of your teams activity.

Caching

Many elements of Code Spaces have been re-written to make better use of caching, which means you should see some performance improvements.
